The Mlota Ecosystem

Three pillars. One mission.

The Mlota Ecosystem is a connected set of initiatives designed to improve the quality, capability, and competitiveness of Malawi's digital economy. Through consulting, workforce development, and ecosystem building, the mission is to create sustainable pathways into employment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and digital transformation.

Pillar 1

Mlota Testing

Enterprise Quality Consulting and Delivery Assurance

Mlota Testing was established to introduce structured quality assurance into Malawian software development teams while building sustainable local testing capability.

The core problem is clear: dedicated software testers are largely absent from development teams in Malawi. As a result, software is deployed directly to production, bugs are discovered by customers, user experience is inconsistent, trust is lost early, and businesses spend money fixing preventable defects.

Customer feedback is not a testing strategy. It is a last line of defence.

The Engagement Framework
1

Quality Assessment

Review of SDLC maturity, release processes, defect leakage points, usability risks, and quality governance practices.

2

Quality Framework Introduction

Implementation of structured testing practices, quality gates, release controls, and proactive risk management before production release.

3

QA Representation

Acting as a dedicated quality partner to engineering and product leadership, ensuring predictable, stable, and commercially aware delivery.

4

Internal Tester Development

Identifying high-potential internal candidates and transitioning them into structured testing roles through hands-on mentoring, ISTQB-aligned training, and certification support.

Why this matters

Testing is not an additional cost. Poor quality is. Production defects are expensive to fix, poor usability drives silent customer loss, reputational damage limits growth, and constant firefighting reduces innovation capacity. Quality protects revenue, customer trust, and long-term business growth.

The objective is capability uplift, not dependency.

Pillar 2

Mlota Testing Academy

Workforce Development and Certification Pathways

Mlota Testing Academy forms the capability building arm of the ecosystem. Rachel has over five years of experience delivering structured software testing training both privately and in partnership with established organisations in the UK — including collaboration with Niyo Group and programmes supported under GOV.UK sponsored initiatives.

The Academy focuses on

  • Foundational testing principles
  • Practical, real-world, scenario-based learning
  • ISTQB-aligned curriculum
  • Career pathway guidance
  • Transition into live project environments

In Malawi, the Academy is designed to

  • Develop entry-level and career-transition testers
  • Provide structured certification pathways
  • Feed skilled testing professionals into local organisations
  • Strengthen the national digital workforce

The long-term objective is to build a sustainable pipeline of quality professionals capable of supporting Malawi's growing technology sector while reducing reliance on imported expertise.

Pillar 3

Lilongwe Tech Exchange

Technology Ecosystem Development and Industry Collaboration

Lilongwe Tech Exchange is a technology platform and ecosystem initiative established through Mlota Holdings Ltd to strengthen Malawi's digital economy through talent development, industry collaboration, innovation, and opportunity creation.

The platform was created in response to several structural challenges within the local technology ecosystem: talented individuals often lack visibility and access to meaningful opportunities; businesses struggle to identify and engage skilled local talent; industry, academia, policymakers, and technology professionals rarely collaborate within structured environments; and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are advancing faster than awareness and adoption across many sectors.

Lilongwe Tech Exchange exists to bridge these gaps.

Five Strategic Pillars
1

Talent Development

Creating pathways for individuals to develop practical, market-relevant skills and become globally competitive technology professionals.

2

Industry Engagement

Connecting organisations with emerging and experienced talent while fostering stronger collaboration between businesses and the technology community.

3

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Supporting founders, builders, and innovators through access to knowledge, networks, and opportunities that accelerate growth.

4

Technology Awareness and Adoption

Promoting understanding and practical application of emerging technologies, including AI, automation, digital transformation, cybersecurity, quality engineering, and modern software delivery practices.

5

Ecosystem Building

Creating stronger relationships between private sector organisations, educational institutions, government stakeholders, investors, and technology professionals to support long-term sector growth.

The platform delivers this mission through leadership forums, industry workshops, knowledge sharing initiatives, professional networking programmes, recruitment opportunities, community partnerships, and regional technology gatherings.

The long-term vision is to establish Lilongwe Tech Exchange as Malawi's leading technology ecosystem platform, with programmes and partnerships spanning Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu — creating a connected technology ecosystem that supports talent, businesses, and innovation across Malawi.
